| After much, much research I believe this is a fine example of Chemical Lace, often known as Swiss Lace which was invented in Switzerland 1883. Under a magnifier, the brides have a fuzziness not seen in hand made lace. Lace of this type has become quite collectible, and especially hard to find large pieces made almost exclusively with it. This piece as you can see is almost all lace with a 21" center of very fine, almost sheer linen. It measures 39" X 42". My photos don't do justice, as they make the lace appear rather flat. There is a tiny grey spot in the center of the linen and broken brides shown in photos, which don't diminish its beauty. It's stunning used diagonally as a centerpiece on a large table, but heavenly over a smaller table where some of the lace drapes over the edge! Easily repaired if desired. It has been laundered gently and pressed. I have so enjoyed just having it around while studying it! I'll be happy to provide laundering advice. Oh, and I did find this in Switzerland! | ||
