Incredible handwork, most likely by several ladies of the Altar Guild, covers this detailed piece! The words in German heavily padded gothic lettering, proclaims "Innocent Lamb of God, Have Mercy on us". As I studied it, I found it to include so much symbolism. My interpretation... The reclining wounded Lamb on the Altar, symbolizes Christ in His sacrificial role and personifies innocence, gentleness and humility. The Sword of the Spirit, and the blood signify the sacrifice. The open end has scalloped edges, again heavily padded button hole stitches. Then there are 12 additions of button hole stitch to run a ribbon through to tie it together,so it could hang from her bed post protecting her night dress! The sides are french seamed. This large and beautifully executed towel was most likely from the Swiss area of Appenzell ,I found it in Zurich. Most work was done at home, and is considered some of the finest work available. Though not as elaborate as some appenzell work, the figural work is perfection, with exquisite detail, worked in my favorite Swiss blue and white, which is also indicative of Appenzell work. Note the precious little bird on the lower left. Each end has a row of drawn open work in this very fine drapey li ...click for details

Over seven inches of lace enhance this sheet or bed cover cover turn down and each end of the matching button on bolster sham! I've never seen a set out of such heavy weight, almost like a very fine canvas! I think it was most likely created as a bed cover. Never used, and of course will soften with use. Even the buttonholes are hand stitched as well as the drawn work stitching. Not familiar with this lace, my research makes me think that this might be hairpin crochet, and seems to be hand m ...click for details
